Crooked Star Bulldogges – Your Go-To Breeder for French Bulldogs on a Budget
Are you searching for a French Bulldog to add to your family but concerned about the high cost of buying one? You’re not alone. Per the AKC listing, French Bulldogs are the most popular dog breeds. Why? These guys are known for their charming personalities, unique features, and loyalty to their families. However, these qualities come with a price tag that can be daunting to some potential pet owners. At Crooked Star Bulldogges, Chris and I understand the challenges of purchasing a French Bulldog on a budget. As one of the largest breeders of Olde English and French Bulldogs in North Texas, we have years of experience in breeding these lovable little dogs and have developed processes to keep the costs of breeding lower without compromising on the quality of our puppies. So if you’re looking for a Frenchie that won’t break the bank, look no further than Crooked Star Bulldogges.
Why are French Bulldogs So Expensive?
Let me begin by stating that breeding French Bulldogs is a complex and costly process. If done correctly, they can be among the most expensive dog breeds to purchase due to the price tag associated with breeding them per birth (cost divided by the number of puppies). For instance, the average cost per litter can range from $5,000 to $7,000 in direct expenses, including progesterone tests, vitamin supplements, shipping semen, male stud fees, breeding insemination, ultrasound or X-ray, C-section, puppy food, vaccinations, microchipping, DNA/genetic testing, and various supplies. All of these expenses add up quickly.
In addition to the cost, the typical size of a French Bulldog litter is only 3 to 5 puppies. Therefore, by doing the math, it is easy to see that the cost per puppy can easily exceed $1,000 to $1,500 per puppy and can easily climb to $2,500 or more depending on the stud fees. Even if the breeder has received a “puppy back” for the stud fees, it is still a cost because they have reduced the number of available puppies by one.
How Crooked Star Bulldogges can mitigate those factors:
First and foremost, Chris and I are highly focused in our approach. At Crooked Star Bulldogges, we’ve brought together a team of experienced professionals, including veterinarians, clinic staff, and partner vendors, who are committed to keeping our breeding costs low while maintaining the quality of our puppies. We employ intentional breeding techniques that significantly reduce our expenses, such as owning a diverse range of stud dogs to avoid high stud fees, performing most of our reproductive procedures (e.g., progesterone testing, sperm collection, and AI process) in-house, and implementing proven procedures to ensure the health of both mother and puppy pre and post-whelp. We also leverage our sheer numbers to obtain discounts from veterinary care to puppy supplies, and we have a strong network of other breeders with resources at our disposal. At the end of the day, we simply produce enough litters to spread our general overhead costs across many litters. In other words, we don’t need to charge top dollar for every puppy to succeed.
Moreover, we don’t prioritize chasing the latest trends in color, hair coat, pattern, or size. Instead, we choose our breeding dogs for specific reasons and standards. This allows us to optimize factors like litter size, ease of whelping, and aftercare, all while maintaining the highest standards of health and temperament in our puppies.
Stay Away from Breeders Selling Ultra-Cheap Puppies
While it may be tempting to purchase a French Bulldog for an ultra-cheap price, we strongly advise against it. These so-called “breeders” are likely bypassing many necessary steps, leading to genetic disorders that can result in a lifetime of vet bills and care. Good breeding practices can greatly reduce the risks of life-long health issues. You need to consider the long-term “cost of ownership,” as there is a lot more to owning a French bulldog than its initial cost. You will spend multiples of the original price during the lifetime of the dog. The question is, “How many multiples?”
How Crooked Star Bulldogges can mitigate that factor:
At Crooked Star Bulldogges, Chris and I are committed to providing high-quality, healthy puppies that will be a loving addition to your family. We follow our strict breeding practices and partner with trusted veterinarians and other professionals to ensure all of our puppies are free of any genetic disorders. We stand by our puppies by offering a 12-month written health warranty. In addition, your puppy will be vet checked before he is picked up , not to mention the 72-hour return policy* should your vet tell you anything you do not want to hear.
Honestly, it’s the little things we do that make a big difference. For example, we require our vet to complete a doctor’s note on each puppy in the litter, and we will give you the complete document, so your vet can assess the entire litter and not simply your puppy.
What is a Reasonable Budget for a French Bulldog?
In the French Bulldog world, it’s all about the color, and there is a direct correlation between color and price. Buying a French Bulldog can be compared to buying a truck, with several models at different price ranges. The “standard color” French Bulldogs can be seen as the LX or base version, while exotic colors, such as blues or lilacs, can be compared to the XLT model. The Isabella Merle Fluffy is similar to the Platinum model. Therefore, a reasonable budget for a French Bulldog depends on the color you are looking for.
How Crooked Star Bulldogges can mitigate that factor:
At Crooked Star Bulldogges, we specialize in breeding standard-color, standard-size, standard-hair-length French Bulldogs that are more reasonably priced, making it easier for you to bring home a lovable Frenchie without breaking the bank. We also offer a range of discounts to active-duty military, veterans, first responders, teachers, and any of their support staff, making it even more affordable for you to bring home a Frenchie.
